Our Genesis

In 1988 amidst persistent poverty in western Odisha, a dedicated group of Sociology and Anthropology students from Sambalpur University resolved to work for the empowerment of the downtrodden. Following extensive consultations with faculty members, social workers, journalists, academicians and government officials, the group evaluated local challenges alongside internal capacities. This collective effort culminated in the formation and registration of Manava Adhikar Seva Samiti (MASS) with the vision of becoming a grassroots-driven Resource Centre.

our genesis

Our Purpose

Western Odisha is traditionally endowed with abundant natural wealth. However, the rapid degradation and exploitation of these resources by vested interests, including moneylenders, unscrupulous traders and black marketeers, have severely threatened the socio-economic, cultural and political fabric of the indigenous communities.

As ecological destruction deepened external dependencies and local populations grew increasingly vulnerable. MASS emerged to reverse this trend by enabling indigenous communities to:

  • Reclaim traditional knowledge: Rediscover and strengthen time-tested indigenous practices and wisdom.
  • Overcome exploitation: Build collective resilience to resist unfair socio-economic practices.
  • Lead self-governance: Plan their own development, manage local resources sustainably, and voice their rights in solidarity with wider civil society.

Approach and Evolution

To function effectively as a genuine Resource Centre, direct grassroots engagement has always been central to our philosophy:

  • State-Wide Outreach: While our roots remain firmly anchored in western Odisha, MASS has expanded its footprint across the entire state, particularly through focused research, policy advocacy, and coalition-building initiatives.
  • Community-Led Action: We work directly within selected clusters, gaining firsthand insights and building trust alongside the communities we serve.
  • Broad Linkages: We foster dynamic networks spanning local, national, and international institutions to elevate grassroots concerns.
