Kanibandhli, a small village in Rengali block of Sambalpur district, is nestled amidst dense forests where most families depend on farming and animal rearing. Among them, the story of Kasturi Parua shines as a remarkable example of determination and transformation.
Belonging to a landless family, Kasturi lived with her husband, son and mother‑in‑law, surviving on irregular daily labour. The uncertainty of work often left the family struggling to meet basic needs.
In 2019, hope arrived when MASS introduced the SC Livelihood Project in Kanibandhli. Kasturi received ₹4,000 as initial support and, combining it with her savings, began goat rearing. With dedication and care, she and her husband nurtured their small herd.
By 2022, Kasturi sold two goats for ₹8,000, enabling her to lease one acre of land for paddy cultivation. This marked a turning point. Goat rearing and farming together stabilised her family’s income. Today, they own 22 goats and lease additional land each year. Their annual earnings include ₹30,000 from labour, ₹8,000–10,000 from goat rearing and 17–18 quintals of paddy from leased farms.
Kasturi’s journey from hardship to empowerment has inspired many in her village. Her success proves that even small initiatives, when combined with perseverance, can transform lives and strengthen communities.
